Protecting Lowestoft,
safeguarding its future.

Lowestoft Flood Protection

Lowestoft Flood Protection is a range of schemes seeking to reduce the risk of flooding from tidal surges, such as in 2013. The programme also seeks to reduce flooding from rivers and surface water rainfall. Over 160 homes and businesses in Lowestoft were affected by the 2013 surge, and road and rail networks were significantly disrupted.

The locations at risk of tidal flooding encompass the area from the Outer Harbour entrance through Lake Lothing to the A1117 Bridge Road crossing and Mutford Lock, which forms the boundary with Oulton Broad. Meanwhile, work needed to reduce the risk of flooding from rivers and extreme rainfall is focusing on the Kirkley area.

The schemes

In July 2020, £43m was awarded by the Government as part of the Green Recovery fund. Additional funding from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, Flood Defence Grant in Aid, Local Levy contributions, the Department for Education and contributions from Suffolk County Council and East Suffolk Council enabled construction on some schemes to get underway.

Working with you

A vital part of the project is working with and consulting local communities, businesses and organisations. Your views are important. At various points in the project there will be public consultations, providing everyone with a chance to have their say. We will also be meeting with communities and businesses throughout the process.

A Virtual Visitor Centre has been launched to enable you to keep up to date with the project, as well as offer a space to leave feedback and ask questions.
